A line of ants on a shelf is a scout trail from a nest that could be under the slab, behind a skirting board, in a wall cavity or outside near the foundation. Spraying the shelf kills the workers you can see and does nothing to the colony sending them. We follow the trail to find where it actually starts before we treat.
Because household spray kills contact ants on the surface but rarely reaches the nest itself, and most ant species can simply reroute the trail once one path is disturbed. That looks like progress for a few days and then the same line reappears somewhere else in the pantry. A treatment that reaches the colony, not just the visible workers, is what actually stops the cycle.
